Spatial analysis: The weirdest death locations in VALORANT Masters Copenhagen, quantified

Posted by Burj on Fri 29 July 2022.

Raw data for this analysis was grabbed from rib.gg - check them out here.

In esports analysis, it's pretty common to try to find where things regularly happen, often displaying this as a heatmap. The map below for example shows the most common spike plant locations at Ascent's B site during Champions 2021.

For this article however, I wanted to try the opposite - to find locations where things rarely happened. With a dataset showing the locations of all deaths on a map, such as for Fracture below, it's possible to find the most isolated points. The death locations farthest from all others, where players managed to die in a spot where nobody else did during the whole tournament.

Using all deaths from the 66 matches played, I've done this to find (scientifically!), the weirdest death locations from VALORANT Masters Copenhagen.

For each map, I've found the death location farthest from any other death location, and ranked them by this distance (measured in the map units used by the VALORANT API).

Buckle up, things are about to get weird.

#1: Zest (DRX, defending) - 199 map units

Bind / DRX vs OpTic / Round 22

The award(?) for the weirdest death position in Masters Copenhagen goes to DRX's Zest.

After a successful defence of the A site by DRX, just crashies and Marved remain on the side of OpTic. Zest rotates from the B site, all the way down to the attacker's side spawn, on the hunt for the two survivors. While he does manage to get behind crashies, crashies checks behind him at just the right time to get the kill.

Zest falls right at the centre of the enemy team's spawn, the only player to die here during the whole event, and a massive 199 map units away from the closest other death.

#2 JoXJo (Northeption, attacking) - 198 map units

Split / XERXIA vs Northeption / Round 9

The second most remote death location comes courtesy of JoXJo.

After an initial push at Split's B site, Northeption begin to rotate over to A. Sushiboys 🤤🐟 however goes on a sneaky lurk, creeping all the way through A back alley to end up just outside attackers spawn. He catches JoXJo completely unaware, who stomps round the corner half clearing the angle before getting swiftly taken down by the Vandal.

The Northeption player therefore claims the dubious title of being the only person to die in this entire section of the map during Masters, with the nearest other deaths being some 198 units away up inside sewer.

#3 Shao (FPX, attacking) - 148 map units

Breeze / Paper Rex vs FPX / Round 15

Paper Rex decide the best defence is a good offence. In true W gaming fashion they play incredibly deep, pushing into the attackers side of the map and pinning FPX in their own spawn.

Pushed all the way back to the beach, Shao manages to take out Jingg, but falls to Forsaken as they rush towards him through the 'snake' connector, becoming the only player to die in this corner of the map during the tournament.

#4 Sayf (Guild, defending) - 138 map units

Ascent / Guild vs FPX / Round 1

Round 1, game 1, first shot of the series.

Guild stack B, leaving the A site open and allowing FPX a free plant. Guild try to rotate down through attacker's spawn, but ardiis is watching for the flank and swiftly detaches Sayf's cranium from his shoulders with the Headhunter. Sayf falls in the middle of his opponents spawn, and Chamber dominance is established.

#5 NagZ (KRÜ, defending) - 88 map units

Icebox / LOUD vs KRÜ / Round 18

Nagz pushes all the way through Icebox A site towards the attackers spawn. While he gains a solid amount of map control and info, he is taken out by Sacy who is watching for the flank from near B garage, becoming one of the few deaths in this corner of the map.

(Kill not caught on stream)

#6 FNS (OpTic, defending) - 88 map units

Haven / Paper Rex vs OpTic / Round 5

On the defence, FNS and Yay try to clear Paper Rex out of Haven's C lobby. After a nice kill onto Mindfreak, Yay falls, leaving FNS who is subsequently forced to escape into the attacker side spawn. He soon falls to f0rsakeN, who manages to take him down despite being concussed. Another player to fall in the middle of his opponents spawn.

Bonus: Weirdest deaths on Fracture

Unsurprisingly, the weirdest deaths on Fracture are on the ropes, although none appear within the overall top 10 weirdest locations. During Masters Copenhagen, just two players died while ziplining. Strangely, they are both also players who feature on this list twice

Zest (Northeption, attacking) - 59 map units

Fracture / DRX vs FPX / Round 16

In the first, Zest is taken down by Shao as he tries to flee from attackers side bridge with the spike.

(Kill not caught on stream)

Sayf (Guild, attacking) - 59 map units

Fracture / Paper Rex vs Guild / Round 13

In the second, Sayf is taken out by f0rsakeN's ghost, also as he came across from attackers side bridge.
