About

This is a site dedicated to the study of 'esports geography'. That is, virtual videogame worlds and how players interact with them, particularly in the context of competitive gaming.

I'm Dr Thomas 'Burj' Burke. I hold a doctorate in geographic information science, and am a geographic information consultant by day. I started this site because I believe that many of the techniques I use every day to analyse and visualise data from the real-world are just as applicable to the unreal worlds of videogames. Insights gained from this geographical analysis could mean the difference between victory and defeat, yet existing work in this area has been limited.

On this site I present my work through interactive maps, dashboards and in-depth articles exploring things such as the best spots to plant the spike in VALORANT, or which lane pro SMITE junglers focus on the most.

I'm always happy to answer questions or hear feedback. If you'd like to get in touch, the best way is to reach out to my on Twitter: @DrBurj.
